Halloween is a very important holiday in the lives of both the Hintons and their parents. It's hard to tell if it's a big deal to the kids, because they're all older now and don't do much around here that involves trick-or-treating. The moms are most likely focused on getting their kids to behave and not go too crazy.
But at least one of the Hintons is into celebrating the holiday. My favorite part of the story is when Huck Finn, the tomcat, and Pecos, the snake, paint themselves for Halloween. I like how Huck "modeled" for Pecos, even though he's just a cat and Pecos's a snake. In this scene, the adults are "working" — that is, being busy — while the kids are "playing," in which they're free to have fun.
In this picture, Huck Finn holds an orange-and-black pumpkin, which is also a symbol of Halloween. The pumpkin is a symbol of good luck for the Hintons.
