Edwards attended University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he got his bachelor's degree in journalism.
He later received his master's degree in public health policy and management from the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Edwards' first book, "The Black Sheep," received the 2010 Carl Sandburg Award for best poetry book. His second book, "In the Waiting," was released in September. Both books were published by University of Illinois Press.
Edwards teaches poetry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He also works as a freelance writer and editor.
Edwards said he wrote "In the Waiting" to reflect what he was going through at that time.
"I was feeling anxious about the future and about life in general," he said. "Mostly, I think I was just thinking about the process of dying."
