Cryptozoology (from the ancient Greek κρυπτός / kruptós, "hidden," ζῷον / zỗion, "animal," and λόγος / lógos, "study," i.e., "study of hidden animals") refers to the search for animals whose existence cannot be conclusively proven. These animal forms are called cryptids. Bernard Heuvelmans, its founder, describes it as "the scientific study of hidden animals, that is to say, animal forms that are still unknown and for which only testimonial or circumstantial proofs are available, or material proofs considered insufficient by some".
