A good example of this is the case of Nguyen Van Linh, a Vietnamese psychiatric patient of the United States who was convicted and executed in California in 2002. Linh was found guilty of killing his wife, Nguyen Thi Thanh Lam, in his native Vietnam in 2001. According to International news reports, Linh is a notorious "compulsive liar" who claimed that he had killed his wife for money, for her to be buried alive beneath some rocks, and for her to be buried in the ground at a different spot than where she was found. His claims were strongly refuted by family members and friends.
In January 2002, Linh was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and pleaded guilty to the crime. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection in California. His family and friends protested his execution, claiming that he was innocent. His execution went ahead on February 10, 2002. He was 72 years old at the time of his execution.
The lesson to be learned here is that due to cultural factors, a person diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia might feel totally justified in killing his/her spouse. The same might be true for a Vietnamese person with a paranoid personality type.
