Mary Anne Atwood (1817 – 1910; maiden name: South) was an English writer on hermeticism and spiritual alchemy. She published only two works in her lifetime: "Early Magnetism in its higher relations to humanity" (1846), and her magnum opus, "A Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery" (1850), written at the request of her father Thomas South. He afterward believed Mary had revealed too many hermetic secrets, and, with her cooperation, burnt every copy of the book they could retrieve. Only a few copies survived, and the work was reissued in 1918, after Mary's death. Although giving up writing, she continued to correspond with several influential theosophists, and "A Suggestive Inquiry" is noted as one of three books which started the influence of the spiritual interpretation of alchemy in early modern Europe.
