He is being held at Tora Prison, in southern Cairo. He is being held under article 90 of the Egyptian penal code, which carries a sentence of either five years in prison or a fine.
The case against Sayed Darwish is similar to those that have already been brought against people like Alber Saber, a blogger and human rights defender who was jailed for one year for “insulting religion,” and seven others who have been tried in absentia on charges of insulting religion. The authorities have also blocked access to Mr. Darwish’s Facebook page.
