In the case of Stevens, his parents were divorced, and he was left with his eccentric mother. It is not a surprise then that he was a genius and was very sensitive. His mother was a woman who loved the arts. It is thought she was suffering from depression too. His mother’s depression led to her suicide when he was only 13, and he witnessed it. It is believed this event led to his own mental illness. Stevens became psychologically ill at 13 and went into a state of depression and self destructive behavior. In college, he met musicians who introduced him to other drugs. During this time, he completely lost his mind. Stevens was discovered in 1963 by Paul Rothchild at the Gate of Horn record store in Cambridge. He released two albums on the label – Aand I Love Her and Another Saturday Night. He also released two solo albums – Teaser and Out of My Sorrow in 1972 and 1974 respectively.
