In fact, Kevin has to deal with the fact that his absent-minded, irresponsible father may have done something to his mother that was so horrible it drove her to suicide. Kevin hates his father and he’s also afraid of him. He’s unsure about what his father is capable of and he becomes increasingly distrustful of him throughout the day. When Kevin arrives at the house he doesn’t trust any of the people in it and he’s hoping that they were all sent there by his father.
As you can see, the situation can be blamed on Kevin’s parents. They’re either too neglectful or too dangerous to allow him to stay at home by himself. Either way, Kevin feels that he has no one to rely on and since he has no home, no one to rely on, he needs to find a safe place to stay. This is what causes him to try to get in touch with his parents. He’s been trying to call them for hours.
