I know what you're thinking. I could have written this entire book about Langston Hughes and why he is so inspirational, but I'm only going to talk about who he was in his personal life. He was a free spirit and he loved living life to the fullest. For example, you can read more about that in his book, "Let America Be America Again."
In January of 1931, Langston Hughes was convicted of selling heroin after the FBI's Chicago office had received a tip that Hughes was selling the narcotics. Hughes was sentenced to one to five years in prison, with the possibility of parole after two years. In February of 1931, Hughes was moved to the Cook County Jail in Chicago.
For two weeks Hughes remained in the Cook County Jail without being brought before a judge. To him, that was a God-given opportunity to write. And so he wrote, and he wrote and he wrote. He wrote about his time in jail. He wrote about his life. He wrote about his dreams for the future. All of this writing was done on toilet paper.
