There are many important lessons to be learned from Hadiya’s struggle for self-realization and freedom. The first lesson is that we, as Muslims, need to provide our younger generations with all the tools they need to navigate their social, familial and professional lives.
We have already been told by several Muslim organizations that the young people are not seeking knowledge, they are seeking acceptance and companionship. They are not seeking guidance, they are seeking to be told the right thing to do. They do not want to be challenged to think; they want to be told what to think. And they do not want to be treated as equals, they want to be treated as inferiors.
As Muslims, we need to stop this trend of assimilation and instead embrace it. We need to accept our young people as they are, and as they wish to become. We need to embrace them without judgment and without shame.
