Shackleton was an explorer of Antarctica. He was a British Royal Navy officer and served during the Victorian Era in Antarctica. His name becomes very famous because he lead the first expedition to reach the South Pole in 1907-1909 at a time when no one was sure that it was even possible. Shackleton's expedition was called the "Endurance" and it was one of the most difficult journeys of exploration in all time. The expedition was supposed to last only 90 days, but lasted for over 4 years. The expedition set sail from Southampton on 4 May 1914 with 29 men, 1,200 horses and 80 sledges.
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton CVO OBE FRGS FRSGS (1874-1922) was an Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. He was one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
