When he was 22, Zangara went to Italy, where he had grown up, and married an Italian woman who was working in America. She was four years younger than him. The two had two children, but she eventually lost her job and they were forced to move to Washington State, where Zangara had family.
“I had to leave my wife in the States because I needed to be here to work,” recalls Zangara. “That was hard for me because I loved her. But I knew she would be better off with my family.”
Zangara says his marriage lasted 22 years. The two had no problems with each other, but he did get into arguments with his wife about politics.
