In the "New 52" continuity of comics, Orpheu's backstory is slightly different. In the first issue of "Justice League Dark" #1, his name was revealed as Orpheus and he is a member of the Injustice League. In the following issue, Orpheu is killed by a magical explosion that also kills a number of innocent people. In the first issue of "Justice League Dark" #8, it is revealed that the explosion was a trap set by a mystic named Adeline Raith.
In "Justice League Dark" #8, Orpheu is shown as a young boy growing up in Afghanistan where he is captured by men working for Raith, who are actually demons disguised as humans, who then torture him. Raith then shows Orpheu how to use his powers.
Orpheu is then shown as an adult who is living in the Sanctum Sanctorum, where he meets John Constantine, who is recruiting people for his new team. Orpheu agrees to join, because he has lost all hope.
The Geração de Orpheu or Grupo de Orfeu were a Portuguese literary movement, largely responsible for the introduction of Modernism to the arts and letters of Portugal through their tri-monthly publication, Orpheu. Following the lead of other European vanguard movements of the early twentieth century, and inspired by the Futurist Vladimir Maiakovsky's urgings, the poets Fernando Pessoa, Mário de Sá-Carneiro and Almada Negreiros, and the painters Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and Guilherme de Santa-Rita formed a journal of art and literature based in Lisbon's Baixa district, with the principal aim of agitating, subverting and scandalizing the Portuguese bourgeoisie and social conventions.
