Abashiri personality type is INFP, and this is the type I’ve found most often in Japan.
Some of the things that set Japan apart from other cultures are many of the things that Japan is famous for. It’s a homogeneous culture, with a strong sense of community, and a strong belief in one another. I don’t think this is unique to Japan, but it seems to be something that the Japanese are very conscious of and very aware of.
Another thing that makes the Japanese unique is their emphasis on work. Most Westerners I know who have been in Japan for any length of time say they wish they had a job on their resume. There’s a certain amount of pride in being a “real” adult, being able to support yourself, and being able to rely on yourself. If you can’t do that in Japan, people tend to be less than enthusiastic about you.
But what I noticed most about Japan was how much of the Japanese personality was expressed in the workplace. The Japanese workplace is almost always “no-talk”, with the exception of work-related phone calls.
