Paul Lawrence Clements is the founder and chairman of the Northrop Grumman Corporation, a defense contractor based in southern California. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri to a father who owned a small grocery store. Clements’ interest in aviation began at an early age and he would frequently visit his father’s store to watch the planes take off and land at nearby Lambert Field.
In 1965, Clements enrolled in the University of Southern California, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He then went on to earn an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley and a doctorate in business administration from Stanford University.
Clements began his career at General Electric as an engineer before leaving to join the United States Air Force to work for NASA. He returned to GE and was eventually appointed senior vice president for the company’s aerospace division. In 1984, Clements left GE and founded his own company, Grumman Aerospace Corporation, which was bought by Northrop Grumman Corporation in 1997.
Dr. Clements is a supporting character in my novel "Omega." He is known for his sluggish and ditzy demeanor. Despite his ingenuity, his insights are often disregarded. Constantly under-estimated and looked down upon, Clements grows resentful of authority. Regardless, he still finds himself unable to disobey. Clements wants to be respected, but is not willing to sacrifice his morality to achieve such. Unlike his co-workers, Clements has a strong moral compass and prides himself on such. He is loyal until you are proven to not be worth his loyalty. Once he feels betrayed, he will stop at nothing to achieve revenge. Those who know his best would describe Clements as compassionate, friendly, humorous, and unconventionally intelligent. Those who judge him at surface value, however, merely view him as incompetent, unreliable, and relatively stupid. Following his sense of justice, Clements pledges to make the world a better place and stand up to his oppressors.
