I was born and raised in a conservative Christian home, and as a young child I used to think that God had a plan for me. This plan involved me marrying someone named Josh and having a family that would be full of children and grandchildren. (I never did get to meet Josh, but I did meet my high school sweetheart, and we had two little girls. I’m still waiting for the grandchildren.)
When I got older, I realized that there were people out there who weren’t like me. I saw how my family treated gays and lesbians and had a lot of questions. I didn’t want to just go along with the crowd, so I decided to do some research. Over time, my views on marriage equality became less and less conservative.
When I discovered that my family was part of the “Religious Right” and that my faith was based on such outdated ideas, I became angry. I felt like my faith was being used as an excuse to discriminate against others. I also wanted to connect with people who shared my beliefs, so I became an advocate for gay equality.
With nearly 1 million followers on her 3-month old TikTok, Joanne Molinaro, also known as The Korean Vegan, has appeared on The Food Network and Al Jazeera English, been featured in Salon, Healthy-ish by Bon Appetit, and the Kitchn, and will release her debut cookbook + memoir with Penguin Random House next fall.
