"Real-life social interactions, on the other hand, are also critical for building and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships," explains study author Sarah E. Hill. "These new findings suggest that the way people form their impressions of others in person is distinct from how they form them online."
The study measured the amount of time participants used social media during the course of the week. Participants were then asked to imagine that they had just come across an acquaintance or acquaintance of theirs who was using social media in a negative way. They were then asked to imagine the individual's online behavior in relation to their real-life behavior.
The participants were asked to rank how likely it was that the acquaintance was corrupting their behavior through social media. The results of the study showed that people with the INTJ personality type were significantly less likely to be influenced by social media.
