Jeff Manchester originally gained notoriety as the "Roofman," a thief known for dropping into fast-food restaurants from the roof and startling the employees before robbing them.
After being arrested for burglarizing a series of chain restaurants, Jeff Manchester found himself sitting in Brown Creek prison in North Carolina. On a rainy day in 2000, he mysteriously vanished from the prison only to be found living in a home made apartment inside of a Toys ‘R Us. He built a small room behind a bike rack and passed the time by playing with remote-controlled cars on the roof of the store in the middle of the night, riding a bike around the store for exercise, and grabbing lunch at Red Lobster when he wasn't eating baby food. With foot traffic increasing in Toys 'R Us, he began burrowing into the walls in order add some space to his domicile when he ended up in the Circuit City. After a failed robbery attempt, Manchester abandoned his hiding place, and got arrested at his girlfriend's home
