While working for the Fuzzy Knights, Swanson was assigned to the "unlucky" job of cleaning the urinals at the Fuzzy Knights' HQ. However, Swanson took a liking to the job and taught himself how to work with the urinals instead of against them. After the Fuzzy Knights were disbanded, he remained as a janitor at the HQ, leading to his nickname, "Purple Man," as a result of his purple mop.
Swanson later came into possession of Fuzzy Knight's old armor, which he decided to wear around to help him become more superhuman in order to win the girl he loved. This backfired; he gained superpowers and became a popular superhero with his own fan club, but he lost the girl after he tried to use his powers to win her heart.
He is the fourth member of the group of buddies along with Peter, Quagmire, and Cleveland who live on Spooner Street. He met Peter when, after just moving into Quahog, the Happy-Go-Lucky Toy Factory needed a final member for their company baseball team. Peter knew that Joe had won many awards for playing baseball in the past; he did not know that Joe was paralyzed below the waist. However, as he does most of the time, Joe proved that this wasn't enough to stop him and he led the team to victory. He lives at 33 Spooner Street with his family.
