While it may be relatively easy to understand how the Introverted and Extraverted Natures can impact personality type, the Fe and Fi scales of Myers-Briggs have their own unique impact on personality. Since Jung's theory of personality type was developed, it has been heavily debated whether Fe and Fi are independent scales or if they are merely two sides of the same coin.
The idea that they are independent scales is supported by much of the research in the field. One problem with this theory is that it is difficult to test because in judging the function of another person, you are assessing his or her use of the auxiliary function. In other words, you are judging whether or not the person uses Extraverted Feeling or Introverted Feeling.
This makes it hard to test the hypothesis since it requires you to assess another person's personality type. Research conducted by Carol Tavris and David Keirsey, both MBTI experts, supports this view of Fe and Fi being independent scales.
