In 1976, he began making threatening phone calls to teenagers and young women in the New York area, often using obscene language and demanding that they strip naked. On July 29, 1977, Berkowitz shot and killed an 18-year-old girl named Peggy Hettrick in Queens, New York, and her boyfriend, William Genovese, at point-blank range. He then killed Ira Rosen, a 23-year-old who was walking his dog in Queens. The next day he shot and killed Rachel Levy, a 13-year-old girl who was playing with her friends in the Bronx Zoo.
