In a small village in Eastern Europe, an illusionist shares his tricks with a local schoolteacher, who enjoys his audience's reactions, but he has been unable to attend a performance because of his wife's illness. She dies while he is away and he returns to bury her. His estranged son shows up and asks him to perform again so that people will remember his mother. He agrees and performs for a large group. However, a young girl from the audience is deeply moved by him and he takes her under his wing.
