7. The Human Cannonball
On July 4, 1974, John Allaire was doing cannonballs into a swimming pool at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The university was hosting a graduation ceremony for the class of 1974 (Allaire graduated from UNLV in 1974), and the event needed to be televised as part of its university theater production.
The cannonball was chosen as the event seemed to fit the theme. “We were having some problems with our cannon,” said the school’s head of the drama department at the time. “So we decided to make a cannon out of John Allaire.”
Allaire was shot out of a cannon at more than 100 miles an hour, and he hit the water with enough force to shatter the glass covering the pool. According to the head of the theater department, Allaire had been told exactly how far he could shoot.
