El graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in Psychology. After graduation, she became a self-employed psychologist who worked with individuals and groups in corporate environments. She has worked as a school psychologist and served as a visiting lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wolverhampton, teaching students at all levels using the Myers Briggs instrument.
Higgins became interested in working with people with autism and Asperger's at the age of 23 when she was asked to evaluate an 11-year-old boy who had been placed in a local school for special education by his parents.
