It's a bit of a downer and fits in with the rest of the game's theming.
The game's main plot revolves around a sentient planet named "Gaia," which is as much a character as any of the game's other characters. The planet itself is an MMO of sorts, where players can participate in "climatic" events like earthquakes, etc. It's up to the player to decide what happens when one of these events happens, but the game will give them a few different responses to their choices, like who they can choose to help and whether they should help at all.
The game has a narrative aspect, in that if you do nothing the story will play out the same way no matter what. If you help, it'll play out differently. If you don't help it'll play out differently. The game also has an achievement system in which you can attempt to complete each climatic event on the planet in any order you want.
