The fact that some people are more "childlike" than others is irrelevant to the argument. The only important thing about being a child is that you are in some way dependent on your parents in order to become a fully functioning adult.
I think this is the case with every personality type, including ISTP. ISTP's are far from children and should be treated as adults. By the way, I think ISTP's should have a more positive connotation. The lack of childhood is something neurotypical people envy. Personally, I wish I grew up, went to high school, got drunk and broke the law. In fact, I think ISTP's should go to college and get degrees (I was a student during my high school years).
I don't see how ISTP's are any less "childlike" than ENTPs. They are just as intelligent, just as neurotic, just as immature and just as good-looking. They just don't grow up. I don't think it is reasonable to assume that every ISTP is a child.
