Austrian statesman, field-marshal and diplomat. Having been an ambassador to St. Petersburg in 1801 and 1809, prince Schwarzenberg is most famous for his mission to Paris, which resulted in a marriage of emperor Napoleon to archduchess Marie-Louise in the beginning of 1810. He fought on Napoleon’s side through the Russian campaign of 1812. After Grand armée’s catastrophic losses in Russia Schwarzenberg became the commander of the allied army that defeated Napoleon decisively in the Battle of Leipzig (1813). He joined the Battle of Paris (1814) that forced French emperor to abdicate. After the allied victory he was appointed president of the Court Military Council (Hofkriegsrat) as well.
