Vesna was born in a small village near Sarajevo in 1942 and suffered many hardships in his early childhood. He was able to escape the war-torn streets of Sarajevo by enrolling in a high school in Belgrade, where he was able to receive a good education. Vesna went on to gain a scholarship to study abroad – at first he enrolled at the Sorbonne, then at Oxford University, then at Cambridge University. After graduating from Cambridge he moved to Paris for two years, where he learned French and studied advanced mathematics.
In 1984, Vesna was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his contributions to the 'skepticism regarding absolute truth'.
