Lyra (Constellation)
Lyra (Constellation) is the constellation surrounding the stars Alpha Lyrae and Beta Lyrae, between a small and a medium sized star. It is also called the Northern Harp. The constellation is located in the northern sky. The stars of Lyra are among the brightest of all stars in the sky. Lyra is a double star, and its constellation is known as a lyre. The stars form a loose and distinct pattern, while they appear to be close to each other. Both stars are comparable in brightness, with a visual magnitude of 4.9 and 4.8 respectively. The separation of the two stars is 2.6 arc seconds, which means that both stars share a common proper motion through space.
The ancient Greeks associated Lyra with the lyre or harp, which was one of their most important musical instruments. The harp was used in sacred rites and was believed to be capable of communicating messages from the gods. The constellation is also known as the northern harp or the northern lyre.
Lyra (/ˈlaɪrə/; Latin for lyre, from Greek λύρα) is a small constellation. It is one of the 48 listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and is one of the modern 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Lyra was often represented on star maps as a vulture or an eagle carrying a lyre, and hence is sometimes referred to as Vultur Cadens or Aquila Cadens ("Falling Vulture" or "Falling Eagle"), respectively. Beginning at the north, Lyra is bordered by Draco, Hercules, Vulpecula, and Cygnus. Lyra is nearly overhead in temperate northern latitudes shortly after midnight at the start of summer. From the equator to about the 40th parallel south it is visible low in the northern sky during the same (thus winter) months.
