Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger told The Washington Post that there was no indication of a connection between the shooting at the Capital Gazette and the threatening letter that was sent to the paper.
"We're very confident there is no connection," Manger said. "But we are putting the capital grade school on soft lockdown. We always do that, anyway. So that's part of the way we're doing this."
Manger said he will go to the school to speak with parents and guardians as they arrive at the building.
"I won't tell them what's going on," he said. "I just want to reassure them that they're safe, they're secure, there's no need for alarm."
Manger said he did not know the identity of the person or people responsible for sending the threatening letter.
"I have no idea who it was," he said. "We have no information whatsoever that would indicate it was targeted at our school specifically."
