The game takes place in the fictional town of New York Mills, Minnesota, which is a small town in the fictional "Devil's Lake Region" of the game. The country side surrounding the town is heavily forested and contains many lakes, a location that has become a central motif for the game. For a large portion of the game's narrative, players are introduced to a much larger world in which the events of "The Secret World" take place.
The game started development in January 2007. It was developed by Funcom with the assistance of a number of other studios, including Gas Powered Games and Digital Extremes. In September 2010, Funcom announced that "The Secret World", which was to be optimized for the Xbox 360, would be delayed by seven months as a result of the continued delays for the launch of Microsoft's new video game console, the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 version was released on August 28, 2011 in North America and Europe.
