Nikolai Gogol was born on March 30, 1809 in Soroki, a village near Moscow. He studied at the local boarding school, then went to the University of Moscow in 1820, where he studied law and philosophy. He received his BA in 1825. However, he did not have a great interest in legal studies and soon drifted towards literature. In 1832, Gogol wrote his first work, “The Diary of a Madman”. The short story was based on his own experience with a psychiatric patient. It was followed by his first major work, “Dead Souls”, published in 1842.
The novel is a satire inspired by the life of Russia’s serfs and it proved to be a great success. Gogol went on to write many other works, among them the “Nevsky Prodigy”, published in 1836 and “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich”, written in 1842. His works are characterized by their sharp satire.
