Marci is the only person Julie ever met who could step into her life and take on the role of a parent, and it was an excellent fit. She is a perceptive, clever, and vibrant girl, and she was interested in exploring Julie's psyche, which was not a bad way to spend a summer. On the other hand, Marci's wishes were sometimes contrary to Julie's own wishes. Marci wanted to call her father before going to her grandmother's funeral, but Julie didn't want to do that. Marci wanted to confront her mother about her erratic behavior, whereas Julie had no desire to do so. Marci wanted to move in with Julie's family, but Julie was not ready for that step.
As Marci's therapist, I had to handle Julie's and Marci's differences in ways that would allow both of them to be happy. I tried to make sure that Marci could have her needs met, and that Julie could have her own needs met, even as I worked with Marci to help her understand and cope with Julie's destructiveness.
Coming to terms with Julie's destructive behavior took time.
