But Schulze said the family has found that Benny didn't fit neatly into his school's program. He wasn't getting the help he needed to succeed in the mainstream environment.
"He's not like other kids," she said. "He's different."
Schulze said her son was "standing on the outside of the room, looking in." He didn't know how to make friends or speak up. He barely spoke at all.
But Schulze said she also saw glimpses of what Benny could become. She said she saw an "almost boyish" side of him when he made friends with fellow students in his class.
