His love of math led him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and worked as a researcher in the field of high energy physics. He later worked on the development of the world’s first superconducting linear accelerator, which was built at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
After working for a short time for Morgan Stanley, Conway left finance in 1971 to become a corporate executive for Digital Equipment Corporation. He became vice president of marketing for DEC’s communications division in 1973, and then vice president of sales and marketing for DEC’s computer division in 1978.
