My parents weren’t hippies. My dad was a professor, and my mom was an elementary school teacher. From the time I was old enough to realize that, I knew that I didn’t fit in with the people I went to church with.
I’d go to Sunday school and pretend to be Jewish for a bit, but then when I realized that it wasn’t going to help me get into heaven, I just kind of gave up. Then I’d go to church for a few years, and then move on to another church. I don’t blame anyone for not knowing what to do with me, because I didn’t know what to do with myself.
I never felt like I belonged anywhere, and I spent a lot of my youth hiding and running away from the world. I ended up getting an apartment and working as a dishwasher at a restaurant. Again, I was alone in a crowd.
I met my wife, and we had a child together.
