The Individuation Phase is when one becomes aware of their true nature (what they actually are). This is the time when they become conscious of the fact that they are not just a physical body but something else (a soul) - what Jung calls the Self. This can be a very difficult time for some people because now they have to decide for themselves who they really are. Their true personality is being revealed to them for the first time and they have to make a choice as to whether to accept it or reject it. The choice is theirs, nobody else's. The person can stay stuck in the negative side of their personality (the shadow) or they can begin to build up their positive side (the ego). This is when the ego begins to take shape and the person begins to learn about who they really are for the first time.
