Kareem Esmail was born and raised in the United Arab Emirates. He is the son of Emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Kareem is the cousin of the current president of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Kareem's mother, Sultana, was a prominent socialite in Abu Dhabi, but died of breast cancer when Kareem was only four. His father remarried to his cousin and Kareem had a brother, Abdul Fatah. Kareem was raised with his brother in Abu Dhabi, until his father legitimized him when he was 18 years old. In 1996, he moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue an acting career.
