I've read about ISTPs as a "natural detective" and as a "natural leader". My personal experience with them is that they are very efficient at what they do and they are very good at figuring things out. When they figure something out, it is usually on their own and on their own time. They don't like to ask for help and even if they do, they don't like to be told what to do or how to do it. They don't like to be told what people think of them and so if asked, they will tell it how it is. In this way, ISTPs are very independent and confident people.
The ISTP personality type is most often found in occupations that require a high level of mathematical and technical skills. Occupations that require the use of logic and reason are also common occupations for this personality type.
