I am a very old-fashioned person. In fact, I have been known to dress in a manner that would have caused a fashion disaster in the 1950s. I am a true believer in the old belief that the proper way to address someone is to call them by their name. (And the proper way to show respect is to call people "Mr." or "Ms.") I delight in remembering and practicing proper etiquette, and I take pride in being perceived as a person of good manners and honor.
The only problem with being old-fashioned is that sometimes it gets me into trouble.
I am frequently treated with disrespect because of my old-fashioned nature. I am also frequently treated with disrespect because of a lack of respect for my superior role. Admittedly, I do not always understand why people don't respect me, but I can usually identify the source of the problem. And I've concluded that among my peers, there are those who do not respect me because they don't know how to treat me respectfully.
I have learned, however, that it doesn't really matter why people don't respect me. What matters is that they don't.
