The origin of Black Shuck is mentioned in the booklet of "Halloween" (1978), written by John Carpenter:
"The first time I ever heard of Black Shuck was from an old man in the village. He said that it was a dog that had been buried alive, and that it would come back on Halloween to kill any who trespassed in the village. He said that all the children would die that night, but none of them ever did. Later I heard another story about it, and this one was much more interesting. It came from an old sailor who had been shipwrecked there many years ago.
