One more thing: here I have been using “Introvert” and “Extrovert” and “Sensing” and “iNtuitive” to refer to the four cognitive functions. These terms are, however, not “official” terms of MBTI®. While it is true that the letters “iN,” “eX,” and “sE” do appear in descriptions of the functions, the official system of MBTI® was developed in the early 1950s by Isabel Myers, who did not use those letters in her typologies. In her earlier publications, Myers used “Rational (R)” and “Irrational (I)” rather than “iNtuitive” and “Sensing,” respectively. Myers also used the term “Judging” to refer to what is now called Judging. In Myers’s published typologies, the terms Introvert and Extravert are used to refer to Judging and Perceiving rather than to the two cognitive functions.
