When Naruto was born, he was given the name Yamato, which has been pronounced "Yamato-Kun" in the Japanese version. For most of his life, he was known as Yamato-Kun, but was called Naruto by his parents in the anime and manga. In the English dub, he was called Naruto Uzumaki.
Yamato's mother died three months after his birth, so his father left him to be raised by a family friend while he went on a mission. The reason behind this is unknown, but it is likely that it was because Yamato was too weak to survive on his own. It is also possible that Yamato's father did not want to cause any trouble for the man that was raising him, or that he had been asked by the village leader to raise Yamato as his son and leave him be.
The only other people that Yamato knew as a child were his uncle Kōta and cousins Kairi and Yūhi.
