Carlos Lehder was born on May 14, 1915 in Alegrete, Brazil to German-born parents. He was raised near Rio de Janeiro as well as in Germany.
Lehder studied engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and graduated in 1941. During that time, he was influenced by communism and Marxism. Because of his socialist beliefs, he worked as a butcher and later as a union organizer.
In 1945, at the time of the Brazilian Revolution, he fled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he met Jorge O’Higgins. The two men helped to establish the Popular Front. Lehder then moved to New York City where he set up a business importing and selling shoes and clothing. He also purchased an automobile repair shop. However, Lehder was arrested by the FBI in 1949 for transporting illegal drugs from Mexico to the U.S. He was convicted and sentenced to thirty years in prison.
While imprisoned, Lehder was a model prisoner and worked hard to form friendships with other inmates.
