During the war, Krylov was imprisoned by the Nazis in a concentration camp, where he was among a group of scientists who worked on a project to construct a nuclear reactor. It was a bloody and difficult time. The Nazis offered him a chance to kill his family, and he turned it down. He escaped from the camp in 1943.
After the war, Krylov traveled throughout the USSR, accompanied by his NKVD minders, who monitored his every move, and reported back to Moscow.
