    In the early episodes (c.8-15), Mulder is portrayed as being very idealistic, showing a strong romantic ideal of human nature. He describes the world in terms of good and evil, often with a religious tone. He is also very emotional, and can become so overwhelmed by his feelings that he'll abandon all sense of practicality. He is still in the process of discovering his true preferences.

    In more recent episodes, his idealism has deteriorated into religious fundamentalism, with a belief in a "force" that moves the world in accordance with its own will. He is also much more suspicious of authority figures, in particular the government.

    Mulder is still a very idealistic character, but this idealism is now more practical and moral than before. He is also much more skeptical of other people's claims, and is much less willing to accept certain things as true.
