    Tolkien first described the Fair Folk in a letter written in August 1919, where he wrote that they are “a kind of supernatural aboriginal people, living on the edges of the world, and sometimes in it.” He also described them as having “a very different language from any other” and their love of music and dancing.

    The Fair Folk are sometimes referred to as Elves, although Tolkien preferred to use the name “Good Folk” or “Gentle Folk” instead. This name is derived from the Latin word “belli gentis,” which means “a people of peace”.

    The Fair Folk are a collection of beings that live in several different realms. There are a number of different types of Fair Folk, including the Leevers (so-called because they move at great speed) and the Lhamas (who are believed to be immortal).

    The Fair Folk are divided up into several different clans.
