The Strong Female Character
It was in a movie theater that I first heard "Strong Female Character" (SFC) described. I was watching a film that starred several SFCs. The women didn't seem to be playing "damsel in distress" roles. Instead, they were as tough as nails, and making mature decisions.
I was surprised. I had been told all my life that women were weak and helpless. In movies, TV shows, and real life, I saw women who were not afraid to take charge of their lives, and face the challenges that came their way. They were strong, but not in the way I had seen women portrayed before. These women were strong because they were smart and capable of taking care of themselves.
At the time of my movie viewing, I thought only action stories had SFCs. But as I kept reading about this topic, I realized that SFCs also appeared in romantic comedies, sci-fi and fantasy stories, as well as in hard-hitting dramas.
