She developed an interest in philanthropy long before she became a newspaper owner. She founded the Graham Center for Youth at the University of North Carolina.

    In 1970, she and her husband, George D. Graham, bought The Washington Post and her father’s controlling interest for $8 million. She was the first woman to own a major newspaper in the United States.

    In 1976, she became the Post’s publisher and continued to be active in philanthropy. In 1983, she was named one of the ten most powerful women in America by Forbes magazine. She served on a bipartisan group of business leaders that formed President Reagan’s Task Force on Executive Compensation.

    In 1987, she gave up her ownership of the Washington Post Company when it merged with several other media companies to form The Washington Post Co.

    She was a board member of Cerner Corporation and helped it become a leader in electronic hospital records.
