The SR-71 was the fastest operational aircraft to ever fly – Mach 3.34. It was also called the “Blackbird” because of it’s black-colored paint and its ability to fly at very high altitudes. [Note: I prefer the term “Super Blackbird,” as it was nicknamed by the media]. It was one of the most technologically advanced airframes built, and cost millions to build.

It was the world’s first strategic reconnaissance aircraft that could fly at very high altitudes and at speeds of Mach 3.34. [Note: A Mach number is a measure of an aircraft’s performance, such as its speed, climb rate and so on. The higher the Mach number, the faster the aircraft is traveling.]
